Veterans Memorial Maintenance Fund
Robert and Clarice (Martin) Morris established this fund for the maintenance and upkeep of the Veterans’ Memorial.
The Washington County Veteran's Memorial began with the discovery of one of Washington County’s fallen soldiers on a memorial in Glasgow, Kentucky. Jerry Sabens was a member of Salem High School’s Class of 1965 who was killed in action in Vietnam.
The Veteran's Memorial is constructed of materials found native to Indiana, in appreciation of the natural resources provided by God and which drew our forefathers to settle in this state.
The uprights are placed chronologically east and west, symbolic of the settlement pattern of both our country and county.
Every major conflict is represented except the Spanish-American War. To present knowledge, no Washington County native died during that conflict.
