Bruce and Marcella Mahuron’s life together is a testament to the power of faith, family, and generosity. Both were born in Pekin, Indiana— Bruce in August 27, 1927 and Marcella on June 9, 1942—where their parents instilled the values that continue to guide them: a strong work ethic, honesty, and kindness. Growing up in small-town America, they each learned early on that you have to work for what you want in life—nothing is simply handed to you.
Their paths first crossed in Louisville, Kentucky. Marcella was studying Business Administration at Spencerian Business College while Bruce was working at Sears Roebuck and Company on 4th and Broadway. Shared rides with mutual friends sparked a romance that blossomed despite their fufteen-year age difference. Over time, they built a life brimming with love, respect, and shared adventures—whether taking bus tours all over the United States and Canada or riding a train to Florida to visit family.
Bruce’s steadfast devotion to God, Country, and Community grew from his early years delivering newspapers and working at Cauble’s Hatchery, and later serving in the U.S. Army at Walter Reed Army Hospital. Though a medical discharge ended his military service, he continued to give back through volunteering as a HAM Radio operator and spending over three decades at Sears, providing top-notch customer service. He was always fascinated by technology—never hesitating to bring home the latest computer or camcorder—and he was equally at home tending his garden, baking persimmon puddings, or sporting his signature jeans, white T-shirt, and suspenders.
Marcella’s journey has been marked by compassion and community involvement. She served as the Treasurer for the East Washington School Corporation for 34 years and has continued part-time work for local government offices and tax preparation companies. Her volunteer spirit shines through her dedication to quilting guilds, flower gardening, and helping at the local Food Bank and LifeSpan Resources. From her time as a cheerleader in high school to her service on various committees—such as the Pekin Homemakers Club, Pekin High School Alumni Association, and the Washington County Community Foundation (WCCF) Board— Marcella has always been ready to lend a hand wherever it’s needed.
Together, they raised two daughters, Melanie and Melissa, and cherish their grandchildren, Raegan and Cameron and great-grandchildren, Emmit James and Bellamy Kane. They weathered joys and sorrows, including the heartbreaking loss of siblings and parents over time. Through it all, their faith and love for each other have remained unwavering. They fondly recall family trips—like their 2011 adventure to Colorado, complete with children and grandchildren—showing that time spent together is one of life’s greatest blessings.
For Bruce, living a meaningful life means being an upstanding Christian influence in Washington County. Marcella hopes to be remembered for giving her time and talent to make the community a better place—“for good, forever.” This passion for service inspired them to establish a fund with the Washington County Community Foundation. They want to ensure that future generations in Washington County have opportunities to thrive, just as they have.
Through decades of commitment, Bruce and Marcella Mahuron exemplify what it means to serve one’s neighbors wholeheartedly. Their story reminds us that with a strong work ethic, generous spirit, and enduring love, we can truly leave a lasting impact—one that benefits our community for years to come.
